How 2 Use My Computer Windows XP

HOME               BACK

Double click the MY COMPUTER icon located on your desktop.

I will click on the DATA (D:) drive and then click the FILE option from the tool bar.

Under the FILE option you will see several options.

OPEN if selected will open the D: drive to allow me to view the files it contains

as shown below.

I will choose EXPLORE.

Once EXPLORE has been selected I am given dual windows. The left side is the FOLDERS and the

Right side is the NAME list of the files.

The third option is the SEARCH.

A new box appears and I can search with many options.

I will jump to the SHARING AND SECURITY option.

I will have many options to choose from.

If I select DO NOT SHARE THIS FOLDER then anyone needing access to my files will be denied. This is not

recommended since it is an entire drive instead of a folder.

You can see in the SHARE NAME box it shows the D$ is shared. This is normal and you will find this on

your C$ drive also. These have been shared for Administrative purposes so it is best to leave this alone.

In the COMMENT you can see this is a DEFAULT SHARE which is created by the system

during its creation.

The USER LIMIT allows you to leave the MAXIMUM ALLOWED set or switch to the ALLOW THIS NUMBER OF USERS.

If you select ALLOW THIS NUMBER OF USERS you will need to decide on a number of users who can connect to your share.

If you click PERMISSION you can decide who has access to the folder over the network by choosing names

of the users available.

If you click the CACHING you can setup the ability to access files offline.

If you click the NEW SHARE you can create a new SHARE NAME, set PERMISSIONS on the new share

and set the USER LIMIT.

Selecting the NEW SHARE will give you the box above.

We will jump back to the FILE options and select FORMAT.

This will erase the drive you have selected.

Be careful with this one unless you do not need the data anymore.

If you click CREATE SHORTCUT while you have a drive highlighted the system

Will ask if you want to create a shortcut on the desktop.

This can be convenient since you would have quick access to the drive.

This is the box wanting to create the desktop shortcut.

Selecting YES will only create a shortcut on the desktop.

If you select RENAME it will allow you to rename the drive.

This could be done if you are going to allow users access to the drive via shared and

they need to know what machine they are accessing.

The final one is PROPERTIES.

This will give you plenty of information about your hard drive or partition which is shown here.

I will not go into these tabs at this time. You will find these in another task list on our site.

This completes the task.
