To migrate user settings from an older computer to a newer Vista computer you have two tools you can use.

One is the Windows Easy Transfer (Used by Home Users) and the User State Migration Tool (Used by IT Professionals NOT home users)

We will begin the Windows Easy Transfer tutorial.

You will boot your old computer up and after you are logged into Windows XP or a previous version place the Windows Vista

CD/DVD into your CD/DVD player.

You will see with the startup screen that you need to click TRANSFER FILES AND SETTINGS FROM ANOTHER COMPUTER.

The Wizard will begin to startup.

The WELCOME TO WINDOWS EASY TRANSFER screen will come up.

It will show you a list of things YOU CAN TRANSFER.

Select NEXT.

You will click on START A NEW TRANSFER unless you are returning to complete another one you had started but never finished.

You need to decide WHICH COMPUTER ARE YOU USING NOW?

I will select MY OLD COMPUTER.

You have several ways of moving the data from the old computer to the new computer.

USE AN EASY TRANSFER CABLE (recommended)

NOTE: You can purchase an Easy Transfer Cable for this to be possible.

TRANSFER DIRECTLY USING A NETWORK CONNECTION.

NOTE: You can use this option to transfer the information to a network then reload your machine and restore back to the same machine.

USE A CD, DVD, OR OTHER REMOVABLE MEDIA.

NOTE: You must have a burner of some type for this to work and you can send the transfer to a USB flash drive or external hard disk.

I will choose the third option for the demo.

I will choose CD OR DVD for this option.

I am asked to insert my media since I chose to send to the CD writer.

You can see I do have the option of Password protecting the information.

If you do this make sure you do not forget the password or your information will be lost.

Select NEXT.

The default is to transfer ALL USER ACOUNTS, FILES, AND SETTINGS which I recommend you do.

I now have a list of all the possible things I can transfer.

You can check and uncheck all the preferences you like here since you know what you will want from the old computer.

Select NEXT.

I now see the transfer has begun.

You will get a final screen and you can select CLOSE.

You are now ready to go to the new computer and download the information.

NOTE: You can download WET from the Microsoft website if needed.

NOTE: The Easy Transfer Cable is a USB Crossover Cable.

NOTE: The USMT client is used normally for Administrators on a network and is command based NOT GUI.

This Ends The Task
