You will now choose the
volume that you want to enable Shadow Copies on by highlighting it and click
ENABLE.
I will highlight C:\ and
click ENABLE.
![]()

You can see I am given an
information page verifying I want to turn this on.
I will click YES.

You can now see the system
is setup on the C: drive and has performed a Shadow Copy at 11:55 PM.
I could come to this page at
any time and click CREATE NOW to manually force a
Shadow Copy to be performed.
I can now click DISABLE if I
would like to stop the Shadow Copies on this drive.
I will click on the SETTINGS
button because this is very important.

You can see that the Shadow
Copies is located on the C:\ drive.
I have a set limit to 2999
for a MAXIMUM SIZE.
I would NOT recommend
setting this to NO LIMIT especially if this has been enabled on the boot
partition.
I would be very careful on what
this is set to if the Shadow Copies is enabled on the boot partition due to
filling up the hard drive.
You have the option of
clicking the SCHEDULE button and setting this up to occur as you specify.

On the SCHEDULE button you
can see I can set this to anytime I like.
I will click the SHEDULE
TASK drop down and choose DAILY.
This is the best option
because my server will make a backup copy of everything at 7:00 AM before
anyone starts work.
Then the server will make
another copy every 3 hours throughout the day for 10 hrs.
This covers all my employees
throughout the work day and I have three backup copies for all my files to
revert back to if needed.
If I would rather have a different
schedule I can click NEW and create a schedule I prefer.
Click OK when done.

We will now take a look at
our newly created Shadow Copy files.
Go to My Computer and you
will right click the volume where the Shadow Copies are stored.

Click Properties from the
list.
You will now click the
SHADOW COPIES tab.
You will see under SHADOW COPIES
OF SELECTED VOLUME the Shadow Copies that have been created.
I have two but I can also
click CREATE NOW to start another one.
Click OK when completed.

NOTE: Remember Shadow Copies
does not replace your regular daily backups.
NOTE: Shadow Copies is a
great tool for your users to restore their own files without the need for IT involvement.
NOTE: You do have a limit of
64 Shadow Copies per volume that can be stored.
NOTE: You must have the
Shadow Copies Client installed before you can retrieve any files.
NOTE: The default size on
any volume for the Shadow Copies is 10% of the volume.
NOTE: The limit to Shadow
Copies is 64 copies and once it reaches this amount it will start over erasing
the very first Shadow Copy it created.
NOTE: If you are running Windows
XP SP2 then you have the Shadow Copies software already installed.
NOTE: The Shadow Copied Files
are all read only files.
NOTE: Refrain from creating
Shadow Copies less than 1 hr intervals.
NOTE: If you have Shadow
Copies enabled on a basic disk I recommend you never upgrade the disk to
dynamic with them enabled.
