How 2 Setup Compression On Files

HOME                  BACK

You will go to MY COMPUTER and enter the C: drive.

Find a folder you want to work with and right click the folder then select PROPERTIES.

I will right click TEST.

On the GENERAL tab click ADVANCED.

You will see under COMPRES OR ENCRYPT ATTRIBUTES the option to check two boxes.

Place a check mark in the box next to COMPRESS CONTENTS TO SAVE DISK SPACE.

Click OK.

You will click OK on this page.

You have two options to choose from.

You can click APPLY CHANGES TO THIS FOLDER ONLY which will encrypt just the folder you are working with.

You can click APPLY CHANGES TO THIS FOLDER, SUBFOLDERS AND FILES which will encrypt any added content inside this folder.

I will click the second option and click OK.

You can see that my TEST folder has now changed color to blue.

You can also see that I have a small C under the ATTRIBUTES listing.

The color blue tells me this is a Compressed folder and the C stands for Compressed.

Right click on TOOLS then select FOLDER OPTIONS.

Now click on the VIEW tab.

You can see here that I could uncheck SHOW ENCRYPTED OR COMPRESSED NTFS FILES IN COLOR which will take away the blue color.

If you decide to do this then click OK once you have made your choice.

You can see the TEST folder is set to show in blue and I still have the letter C under ATTRIBUTES so I can view this quickly.

NOTE: File compression is only supported on NTFS partitions.

NOTE: If you set compression on a folder then any new files you add to the folder become compressed.

NOTE: You cannot use encryption and compression on the same files or folders at the same time.

NOTE: Do not try to compress files that have already been compressed with another program.

NOTE: If you copy or move a compressed file or folder to a NON-NTFS partition the data is uncompressed.

NOTE: If you copy a compressed file or folder it will inherit the compressed state of the destination folder.

NOTE: If you move a compressed file or folder to the same NTFS partition it retains its compressed state.

NOTE: If you move a compressed file or folder to another NTFS partition it inherits the compressed state of the destination folder.
