How 2 Configure Advanced Internet Options In Internet Explorer 7

1st Task On This Page

We will start by opening up Internet Explorer 7.

You do this by clicking on the Internet Explorer 7 icon.

This icon can be found on your desktop or in your Start menu.

Your browser will open. We will start with tabbed browsing feature.

I can go to the FILE menu and select NEW TAB from the list or I can press (Ctrl+T) on my keyboard or I can just click the NEW TAB button shown below inside the red circle.

I will click on the NEW TAB option which is shown below in the red circle.

You will see I have a new TAB shown in the red circle.

You will also see in the box at the top it shows ABOUT:TABS.

I will need to type in the webpage URL that I want this tab to be associated with.

I will type www.nbc.com in the field.

I have typed www.nbc.com in the URL field.

I then need to click the green arrow for the change to take affect.

You will see now I am on the site I chose along with the new tab being associated with the site.

You can keep clicking the NEW TAB button and adding more sites to your setup.

Once you have several pages setup on your Tabbed page you can click the QUICK TABS button or press (Ctrl+Q) on your keyboard.

This is a cool option since it now displays my entire Tabbed selections in a Thumbnail view.

I can now click on any of the boxes and be taken to the page.

The next feature that should be carefully watched is Deleting Webpage History.

When you browse the web using Internet Explorer It stores information about websites that you visit.

This can improve your web speed because the information is kept on your computer so the next time you visit the site it already has the information it needs.

Examples of this are: Your Name and Your Address.

I mentioned earlier about being careful with this because when you use a public computer whatever you typed while on the internet has been held in the computer.

So the next person that comes along may be able to see all the information you typed in.

To help protect yourself you can Delete Webpage History.

You will need to click on TOOLS and select DELETE BROWSING HISTORY from the list of options.

You will now be given the DELETE BROWSING HISTORY box.

You will now need to click the DELETE ALL button.

You do have the option of selecting any of the DELETE buttons for a particular area instead of the DELETE ALL button.

The DELETE ALL button is highly recommended to be used before walking away from any public machine you have been on.

Once you have selected the DELETE ALL button you will be shown a box verifying that you really want to delete the history.

You will also want to click the box for ALSO DELETE FILES AND SETTINGS STORED BY ADD-ONS.

Select YES.

You will now see the information being deleted.

Once complete this box will disappear.

You need to close out of internet Explorer at this point so the cookies held in memory will be cleared.

NOTE: Performing this deletion of the browsing history will remove the Temporary Files, Cookies, Browsing History, Saved Form Information, and Saved Passwords.

2nd Task on This Page

I will now move into Feeds.

I have gone to the CNN.com site to show how the Feeds button works.

You will see that the FEEDS button is now available for use.

I have a drop down arrow next to the FEEDS button.

If I drop the arrow down I have two options.

CNN-TOP STORIES [RSS] (NEW)

CNN-RECENT STORIES [RSS] (NEW)

I will select the first option.

I am now given a new box.

To complete this I will need to click on SUBSCRIBE TO THIS FEED.

I am now shown the option to SUBSCRIBE.

I can create a NEW FOLDER if I so choose to place this Feed into.

You would use the option to create a NEW FOLDER if you find yourself creating several Feeds that pertain to one subject.

An example would be to create a folder called News and place all your Feeds related to the News into the folder.

I have now gone to the news.bbc.co.uk site so I can add more Feeds.

Once I have dropped down the arrow I can select BBC NEWS I HELP I RSS (NEWS) from the list.

I will need to select SUBSCRIBE TO THIS FEED option.

I now again need to click SUBSCRIBE to complete.

You can see I was successful with my subscription.

You will now click the FAVORITES CENTER button.

I can now click the FEEDS button which will show me my two Feeds sites I selected.

I can choose these anytime from here for quick access.

If I had of created a folder for these two Feeds it would have shown up here under the Microsoft Feeds folder.

Another option I may want to set is the schedule of how often the Feeds will be downloaded or in other words kept up to date on the latest news.

Select TOOLS and from the drop down select INTERNET OPTIONS at the bottom of the list.

You will need to select the CONTENT tab and click the SETTINGS button in the FEEDS area.

You can set the schedule to many options from 15 minutes to 1 week. The default is 1 day.

If you are on the web constantly viewing your feeds then you may want this set lower so the news or whatever your feeds are covering are kept up to date more frequent.

One thing that must be checked here is the TURN ON FEED READING VIEW.

If you have this unchecked the Feeds will fail to work.

3rd task On This Page

The last thing we will cover here is How 2 set your Hompage.

Click TOOLS from the tool bar and from the list select INTERNET OPTIONS.

You can see I am on the GENERAL tab.

You will see the HOME PAGE box.

Remove the URL you have in the box and replace it with your new URL and click APPLY and OK.

This ends the tasks.
