How 2
install a IDE CDROM or DVD Player
The 1stthing to
have before you start any installation of hardware in a computer is an ESD
strap.
You can pickup an
Electrostatic Discharge wrist strap at any local electronics store.
It will attach to your wrist
then connect to the computer box you are about to work on.
I have a CDROM/Writer that I
will install.
All CD-ROM and DVD drives
that have IDE connectors will install the same way.

On the back you can see the
Power Plug location.

This is an IDE CD-ROM device
so you can see the IDE pins for my ribbon cable.

You will see that all CD-ROM
devices will have jumpers.
According to where you place
the device on the ribbon cable this will determine the position of the jumpers.
You can configure your
CD-ROM device to be a Primary or Slave device.
If you place the CD-ROM on a
cable that is connected directly to the Motherboard then set the jumpers at the
Primary position.
If you place the CD-ROM on a
cable that is first connected to the Hard Drive then connects to the CD-ROM then
set the jumpers to Slave.
NOTE: If you connect the
Hard Drive on the same cable as your CD-ROM you can bring the speed down on
your Hard Drive.

You will see here that I
have a sound plug connector.
This will have a small cable
that connects here then connects to a port on the Sound Card if you
Have a non integrated sound
system.
NOTE: An integrated sound
system is one that is built into the motherboard.
A Non-integrated sound system is one that has
a card placed in a slot on the motherboard.

You can see with my CD-ROM
that I have slide in brackets.
These brackets allow quick
removal and installation.
You may need to place the
device in the computer and apply screws if these were not included with your
device.

You can see I have two ports
in green.
One is normally used for the
Hard drive and the other for the CD-ROM.
If you have only one cable
then you can connect to one port and connect to the Hard drive 1stand
the end connector on the cable will plug into the CD-ROM.
